European Super League - If top clubs want to turn their backs on fans, now's the time for fans to turn their backs on the clubs

Whether your initial reaction was outrage or apathy, the new European Super League mooted by 12 of Europe’s biggest clubs has still caused a stir with football fans.

European Super League - If top clubs want to turn their backs on fans, now's the time for fans to turn their backs on the clubs

The latest version of a European Super-League has been released. It comes as no surprise that the ‘big’ clubs want to replace competition with guaranteed income and security.

Let's dive right in, and get some thoughts on the plan:

  • First up, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. It’s a move motivated by greed so just say ‘NO’!
  • Can a Super League operate alongside a domestic league? What is to stop these clubs from playing ‘B’ teams in the domestic competition? Does relegation even matter to them if they have a guaranteed place in the Super League?
  • Are you a fan of one of the clubs set to be involved? Are outraged by their owners desire to walk over the club’s history?
  • Is your club excluded? Do you care? Face it, you were never going to win any major silverware without the Top 6 jumping ship so is this not a cause for celebration?
  • Are you a fan of football in general? You are? So you probably stopped watching the Premier League (insert trademark logo here) a few years ago and this debate doesn’t interest you? Gotcha.

Ah, but as we all react to the Super League proposal and condemn businessmen and oligarchs for choosing money over history, we also realize that UK, Spanish and Italian based fans of these clubs are of no concern. What I mean to say is that football clubs are global brands and as much as you like to think you matter, you don’t when there is a global audience to replace you.
