The boys are back in town. (Wallabies 28, SA 26)

You could forgive the Wallaby dressing room celebrations, if the Thin Lizzy classic, The boys are back in town, reverberated around the room.

Kerevi, Rodda, Phillip and the ageless Cooper all back from foreign lands, made significant contributions.

Kerevi gives you go forward and a platform to attack from. Cooper need not worry about pressure as Kerevi took the ball forward rather than make a tough pass. He is far from match fit, but still effective.

Rodda and Phillip got stuck in and getting stuck in works, especially if you can do it for 80 minutes.

Cooper had a fairy tale return, as kickers can have, his accuracy unfaltering. Confidence maintained throughout as a result.

The nett effect a more passionate, aggressive Wallaby performance. Sure, outscored 3 tries to one but the squad needed the win. Clinical attack still an issue. Historically never a Wallaby issue; now it is one!

Elsewhere Swinton and Fainga’a need tackle technique work, senseless penalties given away.

With Paisami and O’Connor available, the midfield has cover. There must be greater fluency in attack from the Kerevi platforms, with everyone straightening the attack, creating space for the full back’s entry.

In the forwards only the player running onto the ball must run fast, the passers need composure, and attract the defenders?

I suspect South Africa will come back stronger next week but the sight of Pollard standing 15 meters behind 95% of his team and punting the ball downfield like an NFL quarterback is a coach killer.

How can it be that the South African backs, cannot play on the front foot, behind a pack of monsters? The game should be played with more variety by the World Champions.

  • Mentally they were not there.
  • No evidence of a team play strategy.
  • Appalling kicking strategy.
