What impact do different forms of transport have on the environment and what are companies doing to help us off-set our carbon footprint?

Green Energy Travel

After a summer of wildfires across the globe and the images of hurricane Ida fresh in the mind, many people are justifiably concerned about global warming and the impacts of human actions on this. Transport accounts for approximately one-fifth [1]of the world’s carbon emissions but each type of transportation is different and many companies do look to offset their emissions. Energy Travel is happy to promote the push towards cleaner and renewable energy sources and to look further into ways that we can make trips less harmful.

Different Forms of Transport

Firstly, let’s look at the direct impact of different types of transportation as taken from the UK government’s methodology paper for reporting on Greenhouse Gas emissions.[2]

If we consider a group heading on a tour to Europe, the graph above shows that per kilometre, flying emits approximately six times more carbon dioxide than coach travel.

Probably, the carbon footprint of an aircraft over a coach or train is just one consideration when choosing how to travel. Trains are inflexible, seas can be choppy, coaches are a slower mode of transport, however, clearly the impact of aircrafts is substantially more than any of the alternatives and should we not take this into account when we choose how to travel.
