What Does The New EES System Mean For Your Travel?

Did you know that travelling into the EU is changing? From the end of 2026 you will need a Visa to enter the EU but before that, the Entry/Exit System (EES) is coming into place. Here’s what you need to know.

What is it?

“The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated IT system for registering non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay (90 days in a 180 day period), each time they cross the external borders of any of the European countries in the Schengen area.”

When did it come into effect?

12th October 2025

What do you need to know/do as a UK citizen?

At destination airport/ferry port (if travelling from Dover), travel documents data and biometric data are required on entry such as fingerprints and picture to create your new digital record at self-service systems (if available) and/or at border control
It is valid for 3 years
If travelling again in this 3 year period, data will already be recorded and therefore border control or self-service systems will only need to verify your entry/exit and verify your biometric data, speeding up the process
All ages are required however, under 12 year olds are exempt from biometric data
